Avocado founders — a family searching for a healthier, non-toxic sleep solution

Los Angeles, California — Est. 2016

We started because our family needed this.

The Why

A search for something better — for our own home.

It started with a simple, anxious question that any new parent will recognize: “What exactly is our baby sleeping on?”

When our founders began researching conventional mattresses, they uncovered something alarming. Most mass-market mattresses are assembled from petroleum-based polyurethane foam, chemical flame retardants, and synthetic fabrics — materials that off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs) directly into the air your family breathes for 8 hours every night.

The organic alternatives they found were either prohibitively expensive (think $8,000–$12,000 for a king), poorly made, or not actually certified organic in any meaningful way — just marketed that way.

So they decided to build what didn't exist: a genuinely non-toxic, fully certified organic mattress that a real family could actually afford. Not a luxury object for the ultra-wealthy. A considered, responsible product for anyone who cares about what they and their children sleep on.

That decision became Avocado — and it changed everything about how we think about sleep, health, and what “natural” actually means.

Avocado mattress artisans hand-tufting in their Los Angeles factory

100%

Made in Los Angeles

Handmade in California

Every stitch is placed by hand. In our own factory.

We own our factory in Los Angeles. That's not a marketing line — it's a fundamental part of how we guarantee quality. When you own the space, you control the process, the people, and the standards.

Each Avocado mattress is hand-tufted by skilled craftspeople using natural cotton twine — a traditional technique that secures the layers permanently without adhesives or chemicals, and that creates the characteristic firm, supportive surface our customers love.

Our artisans are not contract workers at an anonymous overseas facility. They are full-time employees in California, paid fair wages, with healthcare and benefits. Making a product we're proud of means treating the people who make it with respect.

This local model also means dramatically shorter supply chains — fewer miles between the raw organic latex from India and Sri Lanka, the organic wool from California ranches, and the finished mattress arriving at your door.

Direct-to-Consumer

No showrooms. No middlemen. Better materials instead.

Traditional mattress retail is a broken system. A mattress that costs $300 to manufacture ends up on a showroom floor with a $2,000 price tag — most of that margin going to distributors, retailers, and salespeople, not materials.

We built Avocado as a direct-to-consumer brand from day one, and we deliberately kept it that way. When you order an Avocado mattress, it travels from our Los Angeles factory directly to your home. There is no showroom markup. There is no distributor fee. There is no third-party retailer taking a cut.

Every dollar that's not going to a middleman goes into better materials: thicker layers of GOLS-certified organic latex, denser GOTS-certified organic cotton ticking, more hand-tufting time per unit. The result is a mattress that would cost $6,000–$10,000 at a luxury retail store — sold at a fraction of that.

This model also lets us stand behind our product with confidence: a 365-night sleep trial, free pickup if you don't love it, and a 25-year warranty — because we control quality end-to-end.

Our Values

What we believe in — and how it shows up in every product.

Radically Transparent

We publish every supplier, every certification, and every material used in our products. If we wouldn't put it in our own bedroom, it doesn't make the cut.

Made in Los Angeles

Every mattress is hand-tufted and assembled in our own factory. We control every step — from raw material sourcing to the final stitch — so quality is never outsourced.

Direct to Your Door

By shipping directly from our factory to your home, we skip retailer markups entirely. That means better materials, not bigger margins for a showroom.
