Organic latex, wool, cotton, and steel coils — the four core materials inside every Avocado mattress

The Science of Sleep

What's inside
your Avocado mattress.

Four core materials. Zero synthetics. Every ingredient third-party certified — so you never have to take our word for it.

Material 01GOLS Certified

Organic Latex — from tree to bedroom.

Natural latex is harvested from Hevea brasiliensis rubber trees — the same species tapped for centuries for their resilient, springy sap. Our latex comes exclusively from GOLS-certified organic plantations in India and Sri Lanka, where trees are tapped by hand without synthetic pesticides, fertilisers, or growth hormones.

Each tree is scored with a small diagonal cut and the milky sap — called latex serum — flows naturally into collection cups. A single mature tree is tapped every other day for decades without being harmed. It is one of the most renewable raw materials on Earth.

That serum is then whipped into a foam using the Dunlop process — poured into moulds, steam-vulcanised, and washed five times to remove residual proteins. The result is a dense, responsive layer that outlasts any petroleum-based foam by a decade or more.

Why it outperforms memory foam: Memory foam is a closed-cell petroleum product that absorbs and retains body heat. Natural latex is an open-cell structure — air moves freely through it, dissipating heat and moisture throughout the night. It also responds instantly to movement rather than slowly "returning," which reduces motion transfer and makes it far easier to change sleep positions.

Material 02GOTS Certified

Organic Wool — nature's smartest fibre.

We source our wool from certified organic ranches in California, where sheep are raised on open pasture without synthetic hormones, pesticides, or antibiotics. The wool is sheared annually — a process that is harmless and beneficial to the sheep — then cleaned and processed without chlorine or harsh chemical treatments.

Inside your Avocado mattress, a quilted layer of organic wool sits between the latex and the outer cotton cover. It serves three critical functions that no synthetic material can replicate simultaneously.

Moisture-Wicking

Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture before feeling damp, drawing sweat away from your body and releasing it into the air — keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter.

Natural Fire Barrier

Organic wool acts as a chemical-free flame retardant by forming a protective char barrier when exposed to heat. No PBDE chemicals. No boric acid. No proprietary chemical cocktails — just wool doing what wool naturally does.

Temperature Regulation

Wool's crimp structure traps air and naturally regulates temperature across seasons. Unlike synthetic foams that trap heat, wool actively responds to your body's microclimate throughout the night.

Material 03GOTS Certified

Organic Cotton — the skin contact layer.

Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically intensive crops in the world — using approximately 16% of global insecticides despite occupying only 2.5% of agricultural land. The residues from those chemicals don't disappear when the cotton is processed into fabric. They remain, and they end up against your skin for eight hours every night.

Our organic cotton is GOTS-certified (Global Organic Textile Standard) — the world's most stringent organic textile certification. It verifies not just that the raw cotton is grown organically, but that the entire processing chain — spinning, dyeing, weaving, finishing — is conducted without harmful chemicals or exploitative labour practices.

The ticking (outer cover) of every Avocado mattress is woven from this certified cotton in a sateen-weave that is soft, breathable, and naturally hypoallergenic. It is the first thing your body touches when you lie down — and we make sure it's as clean as it can possibly be.

Organic cotton also uses significantly less water than conventional cotton cultivation and rebuilds soil organic matter over time rather than depleting it — making it one of the most meaningful choices we make from an environmental standpoint.

Cross-section of Avocado's individually wrapped pocketed coil system with 5 ergonomic support zones
Material 04Recycled Steel

1,414 coils. Five ergonomic zones. Recycled steel.

Beneath the latex and wool, the Green Mattress is built on a foundation of 1,414 individually wrapped pocketed innerspring coils made from recycled steel. Unlike traditional bonnell or offset coil systems — where all coils move together — pocketed coils respond independently to each part of your body.

This independence is what makes the coil layer critical for spinal alignment: each coil compresses or extends only as much as the weight above it demands. The result is a sleeping surface that contours to your body's natural curves without forcing compensation in other zones.

The coils are arranged across five ergonomic support zones, with varying tempered gauges across the body:

1

Head & Neck

300+ coils

Gentle cushioning with light resistance to cradle without strain

2

Lumbar & Core

500+ coils

Firmest zone — maximum support where spinal alignment is most critical

3

Shoulder

280+ coils

Medium resistance — allows the shoulder to sink without impinging

4

Hip & Pelvis

320+ coils

Reinforced to prevent sag, maintain neutral pelvic tilt

5

Legs & Feet

240+ coils

Soft, responsive — follows natural leg movement during sleep

Environmental Commitments

Carbon Neutral today. Zero-Waste as our destination.

Carbon Neutral Certified

Avocado is a certified Carbon Neutral company — verified annually by Climate Neutral, an independent nonprofit that measures, reduces, and offsets corporate emissions. Our certification covers Scope 1 (direct factory emissions), Scope 2 (purchased energy), and Scope 3 (supply chain and shipping).

We work with a rolling 3-year emissions reduction roadmap. Solar panels power a portion of our Los Angeles facility. Our shipping packaging is recyclable and FSC-certified. And the emissions we cannot yet eliminate are offset through certified carbon projects including reforestation in the Pacific Northwest and methane capture at agricultural facilities.

The goal is not just to be neutral, but to actively become net-negative — removing more carbon than we produce. We publish our annual emissions data publicly in our sustainability report.

Zero-Waste-to-Landfill Goal

Manufacturing any physical product generates waste — fabric offcuts, packaging, damaged components, and returned goods. Most manufacturers send this directly to landfill. We are committed to a different path.

Our current zero-waste initiatives include: textile offcut repurposing into smaller products and insulation, a mattress take-back programme that dismantles returned units for material recovery, cardboard and packaging recycling at 100% of our facilities, and partnership with TerraCycle for hard-to-recycle materials.

We are currently diverting over 85% of factory waste from landfill. Zero-waste-to-landfill certification — where 100% of waste is diverted — is our stated goal by 2027.
